When to Hire a Birth Photographer in Puerto Rico: The Best Time to Book

3 min read

The best time to start looking into birth photography is during pregnancy, early enough to learn about the service without pressure. If you already know you want your birth documented, booking after week 20 is the most comfortable timing, and it is the point where Photocabinet's payment plan begins.

A birth has no fixed start time and no fixed length, so coverage works differently from a standard session: the photographer keeps her calendar open for weeks around your due date. Reserving in advance lets you settle the details well before labor begins.

When in pregnancy should you book?

There is no single correct week. Some families begin searching in the first trimester and others decide once they start organizing the details of their birth.

What matters is not waiting until the final weeks. The monthly calendar is limited, so a given month can fill before the on-call weeks begin.

A practical sequence:

  • First or second trimester: read about the process, review the portfolio and decide what you want documented.

  • After week 20: reserve your date and pay the deposit. This leaves comfortable spacing between the four payments.

  • Week 37 onward: on-call coverage begins.

How on-call coverage works

At Photocabinet, on-call coverage runs from week 37 to week 42. During that period I am ready to leave at any hour, and I stay in constant communication with the family and the midwife. If the birth goes past week 42 with mother and baby healthy, on-call continues at no additional cost.

When the family lives far away, I sometimes leave during the latent phase of labor instead of waiting for active labor, and I leave as soon as your midwife confirms that birth is imminent.

How the coverage is documented

Photocabinet focuses on documentary home birth photography. Coverage runs from active labor through the first hour postpartum, and everything is documented as it happens, without interfering in the process.

I am certified by Birth Becomes You and a member of the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers (IAPBP), and I have documented home births in Puerto Rico since 2012.

What to prepare before you reserve

  1. Your estimated due date

  2. Where you plan to give birth

  3. Your midwife's name and contact

  4. The people who will be present

  5. Your preferences about what can be published

With these five points, we can confirm availability and set the details of your coverage in a single conversation.

What if you are already in the third trimester?

You can still check availability. Being in the third trimester does not automatically close the door. Whether a new booking is possible depends on the calendar and on how close your due date is.

If you are considering the service, reach out as soon as possible with your due date.
